What is the annual cost of electricity consumption for a pool?

Are you still having difficulty determining the annual electricity budget for the pool project you are planning? Don’t worry!

Are you still having difficulty determining the annual electricity budget for the pool project you are planning? Don’t worry! Many parameters need to be considered.

Follow this guide to find out the annual cost of operating your pool!

The pump, most expensive item for your pool

One more reason to monitor your electricity consumption!

To limit costs, opt for variable speed pumps that allow the speed to be adjusted in line with the requirements of your pool. For example, the TriStar® VSTD Pump results in up to 85 % savings* in electricity consumption.

*Running at low speed. Energy savings of at least 65% are generally achieved.

Remember this principle: if you divide the pump rotation speed by 2, you divide the head losses by 4 and the consumption by 8.

This is the calculation method to compare the consumption of a classic pump with a variable speed pump:

For a pool basin measuring 8 m × 4 m × 1.5 m = 48 m3 with a filtration period from April to October (cost for 1 kilowatt hour: € 0.15)

“Classic” single speed pump with intermittent operation (11h/day): € 287.44 / year

Hayward Max Flo XL™ VSTD pump in continuous operation (24h/day): € 65.75 / year

In this case we see energy savings of 77 % when comparing a classic single speed pump with a Hayward variable speed pump. Evaluate your electricity savings thanks to our variable speed pump configurator.

Heat pumps, to extend your pool season

The cost of using a heat pump will depend on multiple parameters: weather conditions, presence of a pool shelter, indoor or outdoor pool, your desire to swim in the middle of January or not…

For an air/water heat pump, the average cost of consumption per season is € 2.50 to € 3.70 per m3 heated in the pool.

Good to know: a heat pump consumes 50 Wh when it is turned on but not heating, in other words 1.2 kWh in a day without heating the pool. You therefore have everything to gain from switching off an appliance rather than leaving it running, for example in the month of August .

Pool cleaners: electric or hydraulic?

Whether electric or hydraulic, the consumption of your pool cleaner should in theory not cost you very much.

Used for 1 to 2 hours per week for around 20 weeks, it should consume between 6 and 12 kWh per season… in other words € 1 to € 2! Concerning the hydraulic cleaner, like the PoolVac V-Flex™ used during hours of pool filtration, there is no energy requirement other than for the filtration pump.

Lighting: LEDs and spotlights

The Hayward lights are LED spotlights which on average consume 10 times less than the average consumption of a traditional spotlight (300W). They will be the best feature to accompany your night-time swims thanks to their low electricity consumption.

The following calculation will help you to determine the annual consumption, given that the operating time of a spotlight is estimated to be 50 hours per season:

Consumption in Watts (30 Watts) x number of hours of use/week x number of weeks x price per kW.

You now have all the information you need to set up an estimation of the annual electricity consumption budget for your pool!
