How much electricity does a pool pump consume?

Do you want to know how much a pool pump consumes and why you should choose a variable speed pump? Dive into our comprehensive guide to effective energy solutions.

What is a pool pump?

A pool pump is an essential applicance composed of an electric motor which sucks up water from the pool to pass it through a filter, thus eliminating impurities. Depending on the size of your pool, the type of the water and the filtration system, there are various models of pumps suitable for each requirement. The pumps even have a strainer, blocking large debris so that the main filter can concentrate on the smallest impurities.

The pump, top of the list of pool expenses

When choosing a pump for your pool, electricity consumption is a key factor. Not only does it have an influence on your electricity bill, it also affects the environment. It is therefore crucial to select a low consumption, variable-speed pump to enjoy your pool with peace of mind.

The advantages of a variable-speed pump

  • Increased flexibility: a multitude of speeds to meet all operating requirements of your pool, such as high-speed backwashing and low-speed filtration.
  • Reduced electricity consumption: slower operation with permanent magnet motors results in electricity savings of up to 85%*.
  • Silent operation: thanks to its slow speed operation, you can enjoy your pool in total peace of mind.
  • Improved filtration quality and reduced chemical use: slow speed filtration improves the water quality and reduces the need for chemicals.
  • Extented lifetime of the filtration system: by adjusting the speed to suit the requirements, variable-speed pumps operate more smoothly, thus reducing the stress on the internal components and extending their lifetime.

Hayward low consumption pumps

At Hayward, we have developed several models of variable-speed pumps, in particular the TriStar® VSTD, the Super Pump® VSTD and the Max Flo XL™ VSTD. These pumps adjust their speed as a function of requirements, thus reducing the energy consumption with respect to single-speed pumps. Here is a view of the main advantages of each model:

The TriStar® VSTD Pump

  • Performance and energy efficiency: thanks to its variable speed motor, it significantly reduces the electricity consumption.
  • Silent and long-lasting: smoother operation, which extends the lifetime of the internal components.

The Super Pump® VSTD Pump

  • Maximum efficiency: automatically adjusts the speed to meet the requirements of your pool, offering optimal filtration with minimal consumption.
  • Easy installation: compatible with most existing systems, making its integration easier.

A worthwile investment

Although acquiring a variable-speed pump may seem expensive, the investment quickly pays for itself thanks to the energy savings made. In summer, 45% of the electricity costs come from pool operation. Imagine being able to save up to 85% on your electricity use: in just three seasons, your investment will have paid for itself. Remember this principle: if you divide the pump rotation speed by 2, you divide the head losses by 4, and your consumption by 8.

Example of consumption calculation

For an 8m x 4m x 1.5m pool = 48m³ with a filtration period from April to October (cost per kWh: €0.24):

  • “Classic” single-speed pump with intermittent operation (11h/day): €330.73 / year.
  • Hayward Max Flo XL™ VSTD pump with continuous operation (24h/day): €38.53 / year.

In this case, we see energy savins of 86% when comparing a classic single-speed pump with a variable-speed Hayward pump.

The icing on the cake

Reducing energy consumption also means reducing the carbon footprint. By selecting a Hayward pump, you are doing a good deed for the planet whilst enjoying your pool, and you are taking a step towards an eco-friendly pool. Lower electricity consumption, less pollution, and more fun in the water!

Enjoy your eco-friendly swimming!

*Potential savings are generally observed between 65% and 85% for operation at slow speed.
