Frequently Asked Questions

What are the various water treatment options available for a pool?

Water treatment options for pools include chlorine, salt chlorination, UV disinfection, bromine and ozone.

We provide an overview of each option bellow:

  • Chlorine: this solution is the most popular. It is highly effective against bacteria and algae and therefore results in clean, crystal-clear water. However, it requires a good pH balance in the water and can irritate the skin and eyes.
  • Salt chlorination: this involves the generation of chlorine by a salt chlorinator from salt dissolved in the water. With this method, it is no longer necessary to manually add chlorine to the pool. The initial investment is higher, but this quickly pays for itself due to the almost infinite nature of the salt-chlorine transformation cycle.
  • UV disinfection: this option uses UV lamps to kill off micro-organisms that are present in the water. The UV rays destroy the DNA bacteria, viruses and algae and make them inactive. This method is effective, but does not give your pool water disinfecting properties.
  • Bromine: this is an alternative to chlorine and acts in a similar way as a disinfectant. It is effective over a wider range of temperatures but costs more than chlorine.
  • Ozone: ozonation uses ozone to disinfect the pool water. This oxidant eliminates bacteria, viruses and organic chemical products. However, special equipment is required to generate the ozone.
