How can I calculate the power required for a pool filtration pump?

To calculate the power required for a pool filtration pump, several factors must be taken into account, in particular the pool volume, the required flow rate and the filtration system's specific characteristics.

Follow these steps:

  1. Calculate your pool volume: measure the length, width and depth of your pool to obtain the volume in cubic metres (m³).
  2. Calculate the required flow rate: the flow rate depends on the size of the pool, the desired time required to filter the water and the number of filtration cycles per day. The general formula for calculating the flow rate is : Required flow rate = pool volume / total filtration time.

    For example, to filter all the water in a 50 m³ pool in 6 hours, the flow rate required is 50 m³/ 6 hours = 8.33 m³/h.

  3. Consider the head losses: the head losses are the resistance encountered by the water as it circulates through the filtration system, including the pipes, filters and accessories. Application of a security margin of approximately 20% on the calculated flow rate is recommended, to compensate for these head losses.
  4. Select the power of your pump: once the required flow rate has been determined, you must select a suitable filtration pump. The power of a pool pump is generally measured in horsepower (hp) or in Watts (W). Tbe power requirement depends on the required flow rate, the distance between the pump and the filtration system, and the filtration system's special characteristics.
