Why should you switch to a variable speed pool pump?
The advantages of a variable speed pool pump: energy savings, silence and daily performance.
Filtration pumps have long been neglected, but they are in fact one of the items of pool equipment with the highest energy consumption. They can represent up to 70 % of a pool’s annual electricity consumption. Choosing a variable speed pool pump not only drastically reduces this consumption, but also improves filtration quality, reduces operating noise, and extends the lifetime of the system. A solution that is both technical, economic and sustainable.
Significant reductions in energy consumption
Traditional pumps, at fixed speed, operate at constant power, no matter what task must be accomplished. Yet, most of the time, the maximum rate is not required. Hayward® variable speed pool pumps adapt to actual requirements: daily filtration, cleaning, heating, counter-current swimming, etc. Each mode has an optimal speed.
This customised operation significantly reduces the pool electricity consumption. Depending on the cycles programmed, energy savings of up to 85 % can be made, with maximum filtration efficiency maintained. These energy savings are reflected, over time, in a return on investment that is often complete after just three seasons.
Quieter and more pleasant operation of the variable speed pool pump
Another immediate benefit of variable speed pool pumps is their silent operation. At low speeds, the pump produces only a little more noise than a slight flow of air. This means it can be used for extended periods or at night without creating noise disturbance, in particular for pools close to housing.
This noise reduction is achieved by using permanent magnet motors, which are more efficient and quieter than classic asynchronous motors.
A longer lifetime and reduced maintenance
By operating at low speeds, wear on components is reduced. Starting-up progressively preserves the motor, reduces fits and starts and extends the lifetime of the pool pump. Demands on the hydraulic system are also reduced, which extends the lifetime of the pipes, valves and filter.
In terms of maintenance, using the integrated digital interface speeds and time slots can be programmed in detail, cycles can be controlled, and the pump can adapt to the actual use of the pool without manual actions.
Hayward variable speed pool pump models for all pools
Hayward offers a full range of variable speed pool pumps, compatible with most existing configurations:

TriStar® VSTD:
Premium model, ideal for large pools or complex installations.
It combines high flow rate, maximum energy efficiency, and silent operation.

Super Pump® VSTD:
Compact, versatile version, perfect for medium-sized residential pools.

Max-Flo XL™ VSTD:
Ideal balance between hydraulic performance and ease of installation.

RS II VSTD:
Designed for demanding pools, it is suitable for pools with additional equipment (counter-current swimming, heating, robotic cleaners, etc.).

K-Flo™ VSTD:
Robust motor, excellent efficiency, easy assembly on existing installations.
All these variable speed pool pump models include a permanent magnet motor, an active power factor corrector, an intuitive digital screen, and an extended programming range, ensuring precise adjustment at each use.
A solution in line with environmental issues
Reducing the electricity use of a pool has become a determining factor in the choices made, as much for economic reasons as eco-friendly values. Paired with a cartridge filter (such as the SwimClear™), a variable speed pump also reduces water requirements (no backwashing) and the need for chemicals (finer filtration, less corrective disinfection).
It thus becomes a powerful lever for transforming a classic pool into an eco-friendly pool, without sacrificing user comfort.
Case study: a pool renovation which changes everything
A couple based in south-west France decided to renovate their pool, measuring 8 x 4 metres. Fitted until then with a classic 1.1 kW pump, it consumed on average 1500 kWh per year, simply for filtration. By replacing this pump with a Hayward Super Pump® VSTD, they reduced their annual electricity consumption to approximately 500 kWh, in other words energy savings of nearly 65 %.
Result: a real reduction in the electricity bill, quieter operation during the day and at night, and more homogeneous filtration. The system, which paid for itself in three seasons, is still operating perfectly after five years of use.
Replacing a classic fixed speed pool pump with a variable speed pump is one of the most worthwhile and clearly visible investments to make in pool operation. Thanks to smart regulation, tried-and-tested technology and a range suitable for all pools, Hayward® variable speed pumps provide a concrete answer to today’s challenges: reducing electricity consumption, improving comfort, and extending the lifetime of the equipment.
